Open Water Swim Intro Course

Have you dreamed of becoming an open water swimmer, but not sure where to start?

Our Swim Intro Course is an ideal way to transition from pool to open water.

What is the Intro Course?

The Intro Course consists of 4 guided sessions at a tidal pool or protected beach, which creates an ideal setting for swimmers new to open water.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to handle cold water
  • Skills such as sighting and freestyle technique
  • Building up your fitness and confidence in cold water
  • Ocean safety principles

Am I fit enough to join?

We have two levels of Intro Courses:

Level 1: 200-800m

To sign up, you need to be able to swim at least 200m (8 lengths of a 25m pool) continuously.

Level 2: 800m-1.6km

To sign up, you need to be able to swim at least 800m in open water (tidal pool, ocean, dam or river) and have recent experience in cold water.

At the end of the Intro Courses, there’s an option to continue onto our regular ocean swimming group at various beaches in Cape Town provided that you are comfortable swimming at least 1.6km in the ocean.

Do I need a wetsuit?

Wetsuits are optional. The course gradually builds up your cold water exposure, so it is possible to adapt as you go. If you struggle with the cold, a wetsuit can help you feel more comfortable, and would be useful if you plan to continue your open water swimming after the course.
