Swimmer’s Spotlight: Meet Gary

Our May Swimmer’s Spotlight features a member with a generous heart, Gary.

If Gary isn’t keeping a watchful eye on fellow swimmers in the water, he’s chatting up a storm in the parking lot – plotting his next adventure or offering business advice to younger swimmers.

Full name: Gary Neubert

DOB: 5 November 1965

City and country of birth: Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), South Africa

Profession/purpose: Business owner, and my purpose is to enjoy life, explore and never say no.

When I started open water swimming: October’23 I joined Cape Town Open Water Swim and that was my first time into proper open water swimming.

Swim attire preference: Wetsuit

Morning coffee or morning dip? Morning coffee and my rusk – and then a cold dip.

Sunrise or sunset swim? Sunrise swim

False Bay or Atlantic? Atlantic

My most memorable swim:

Without a doubt Cape Point.

That was just absolutely spectacular, from getting dumped onto Diaz beach, to swimming around the point and looking back at that lighthouse from the ocean – it doesn’t get better than that. And I was going with probably one of the better people to swim with, good ol’ Slick Vic. It was just a magnificent swim. We were very fortunate with the conditions we had.

What I like most about the swim group:

I love the people. I think there’s a diversity of people in this group, it really is just a wonderful bunch of people that support each other and have a lot of fun together. I mean, the parking lot banter that happens before and after the swims is amazing. And the support; if anybody is doing the Robben Island swim or Cape Point swim, the support that you get from your team, if you’re looking for training partners, people are there and the encouragement is there.

My swim motto:

Life motto: “Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today.”

Swim motto: “Never take the sea for granted.”

We are so lucky to have you part of the team, Gary!

If you’d like to join him and others in our ocean adventures, we’d love to welcome you to the team.
